We’re working with the police to make London’s transport system even safer. As a result, crime is now at its lowest level in over six years and is continuing to fall, so our customers are feeling safer.
We fund over 2,500 uniformed officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (Met), British Transport Police (BTP) and the City of London Police (CoLP). They police London’s transport network to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour, and make you feel safer when travelling in London.
Metropolitan Police Service
The Met is responsible for policing London’s roads and wider environment (outside of the City of London).
We fund a dedicated unit within the Met – the Safer Transport Command. It provides additional police support to London’s buses, licensed taxis and private hire vehicles. It also helps to reduce congestion and bus flow issues, improves the safety and security of cycling and enforces red route parking restrictions.
British Transport Police
The BTP is the national police force for the railways in the UK. It is responsible for policing London Underground (LU), DLR, London Tramlink, London Overground and the rail network in London.
London is served by three BTP areas:
- BTP L Area is the dedicated policing unit for LU and DLR
- BTP London North Area covers Overground rail stations in north London and beyond (as far as East Anglia)
- BTP London South Area covers Overground rail stations in south London, London Tramlink and the south east of England
We fully fund the BTP L area but also fund officers in the other BTP London areas.
City of London Police
The City of London Police are responsible for the safety and security of residents and commuters in the City, or ‘Square Mile’, of London. It focuses on promoting safer travel at night, reducing cycle theft, increasing road safety, and tackling crime and antisocial behaviour on the buses.
Travel Safe Officers
There are Travel Safe Officers on the Docklands Light Railway and London Overground network. These officers work alongside BTP officers, patrolling trains and stations to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour, and providing assistance to passengers.
